🔎 Pricing & Value

Why Two Identical Cars Can Have Vastly Different Prices in Australia

Same make, model and year — but a $6,000 price difference. Here's what's actually driving the gap.

You've found two 2021 Toyota RAV4 GXL Hybrids on the same listing site, same year, same colour. One is $38,000. The other is $44,000. Why?

Kilometres

This is the biggest driver of price variance. A car with 30,000km will command a significant premium over the same model with 90,000km. As a rough guide, each 10,000km above the average (roughly 15,000km/year) reduces value by 3–5%.

Service History

A full dealer service history with all stamps adds real money — typically $1,500–$3,000 on a $30,000+ car. Gaps in service history, or servicing by an unknown workshop, suppresses value.

Condition

TrueCarPrice's condition scale shows that a car in "Good" condition can command 8–10% more than the same car in "Average" condition. Panel damage, worn interiors, cracked windscreens and non-genuine parts all drag value down.

Options and Specification

Some badges within a model range carry significantly more equipment. A RAV4 GXL with the optional sunroof or tow pack is worth more than a base GXL. Check the build sheet, not just the badge.

Seller Type

Dealer listings carry a premium of typically 12–20% over equivalent private listings. Some buyers pay it for the security of dealer consumer guarantees. Others prefer private to access a better price.

Location

Urban vs regional pricing can vary by 10–15% for the same car. Popular 4WDs often attract premium pricing in rural and regional areas where demand is high and supply is low.
